Painting the trailer and Treating it for rust.

The trailer is the original trailer from 1961 so over time different owners have painted it sometimes using a brush. So I took it down to the metal and treated the rust with rust restorer (Black)

At one time in this trailers life the tongue must have been removed and replaces with a welded version its works but isn't the greatest version out there. I will replace the tongue another day but to get back to the boat restoration time wise I will leave it for now.

You can see where the tongue attaches all the rust I have been treating.

Primer (white) Im going to be painting the trailer yellow so I used a light color primer.

The Beginning of Trailer Restoration

Before spending a tone of money and time restoring the boat, Ill need to restore the trailer. The last thing I need to to have all my time and money thrown across the freeway because its not fun repairing and cleaning up an old trailer.

Replacing the front wheel with a more reliable one and it can be tilted up when your attached to a vehicle.

Removing the old paint and rust. Mainly I want the rust gone the paint is secondary to me as long as it has a good adherence then it can stay. Ill feather it out and when I primer the trailer Ill worry about making it so that its invisible.

I started with a 80 grit wheel but found that forty grit was much better for removing the paint however I was very careful not to spend to much time around the welds so not to compromise them.

I have already been told that there are many different ways to get the paint and rust off. Maybe even easier maybe next time ill try chemical removers or sandblasting but I didn't have a sand blaster and Chemicals to remove old paint and rust can be really messy.

Cameron has been a huge help on this project and has taken to working with power tools like a fish in water.

"The Rust" after removing the big stuff or chips of rust with a wire brush or a wire tip that attaches to my drill we will treat the rust with Rust restorer, you can find different name brands at any hardware store in the spray paint section. In this case three can will be enough. Don't think however that the rust restorer is your primer its not after applying the rest restorer you still must apply primer before paint but ill get into that later when we are talking about paint not prep.

I will use smaller tools and maybe even just scrapers to get to the smaller places and just maybe Ill break down an try some chemical paint remover.

The Trailer

The trailer need's work Not a lot but it could use bringing it up to date. It's 11-12-2015 and I'm posting before pic's . When I bought the boat if you recall in a earlier post we took it straight to a RV shop to have some work done one of the things we had done was replace the tires and make sure the wiring is in working order. I have ordered new Roller's a new wench, carpet for the runners and some other small part's I think we will need to make the trailer ready to carry the boat when its painted. Structurally the trailer is sound.

Building a stand so I can restore the Trailer and Eventually Paint

The trailer all though it is in pretty good condition will have to be restored. The rubber rollers are old and leave marks on the hull and if im going to paint the boat im going to make the changes to the trailer so not to ruin my our new paint job. Making the stands for the boat to rest upon wasn't that big of a deal. About $70 in parts, wood 1/4" inch 4'x8' ft plywood (5) five 2"x6"x8' pine planks (4) four 1/2"x6" bolts, nuts and washers, and about 3 hours to build and your good to go.
